Winster in WorldCom/Bernie Ebbers Mile High Club Shocker!

From page six:

July 14, 2005 -- WINNIE Dunbar, a CNN business news producer based in New York, missed the hurricane that never arrived in Memphis — but she ended up in the right seat on her Northeast flight back. Dunbar, who was returning to cover the sentencing of WorldCom fraudster Bernie Ebbers, found herself sitting next to him and his wife in coach. "I'm going to New York for the same reason you are," Dunbar told the former billionaire, who was tight-lipped except to say he found his trial "completely bizarre." Ebbers kept an unlit cigar clenched in his teeth the whole flight, even while asleep, except when he was eating candy and potato chips. After his petite spouse collected their luggage, they waited on the taxi line, chauffeur-driven limousines a distant memory. Ebbers got 25 years yesterday.

Yesterday I flew into Los Angeles to look into internships and got the job with a firm I'd been talking to. Easiest interview of my life! They really liked my stuff: (more later). I start in mid-May after the semester finishes.

Anyone want to visit me in LA this summer?

Bonus: Super short trip to sin city in Sept. You can throw a rock from Hollywood Blvd and break one of the signs in Vegas.

Nonagon at the Bottom Lounge this Thursday

nonagonposter.jpg

Well it looks like the swell folks at MP Productions and The Bottom Lounge liked us well enough to make us their Johnny-on-the-spot... no, not the portable toilet... Rather, a last minute addition to an AMAZING bill at The Bottom Lounge THIS WEEK!

The Bottom Lounge is located at 3206 N. Wilton (right underneath the Belmont Red/Brown line El Stop)

On Thursday, December 2nd, the doors will open at 8PM. Shortly after that, we (Nonagon) will play a set similar to the one we played a couple of weeks ago (unless we can throw together a surprise or two). I think that Behold! The Living Corpse is up next, then Pines, a local instrumental combo, and finally Big Business featuring ex-Karp and Murder City Devils members!

Oh yeah! To the left should be a snapshot of the (can I say "kick-ass"?) poster that Jay Ryan designed and Mat Daly printed for us. If you haven’t yet been to The Bird Machine, you are missing out.

robertgomez_kingandhisadvisors.jpg

A number of my woodcuts will be on display in a show called Little Utopias at the Heaven Gallery (1550 N Milwaukee ave., 2 fl, in Chicago's Wicker Park Neighborhood). The show's opening reception is on October 15th at 6pm, in conjunction with the Select 3 Media Festival.

On the night of the opening there's a suggested $10 donation for the festival itself (at 8pm that night). That donation will get you a DVD and a t-shirt. See the site for details.

I've updated my website with scans of images that will be featured in the show.

If you can't make it to this one, I will also be having a solo exhibition, with the same work, out in suburbia (Wheaton, Ill.) in November.

The Band Currently Known as Nonagon

Got any plans for this weekend? Howza 'bout rounding up the gang and heading down to Champaign/Urbana for some hot rock action! Come see Nonagon, Triple Whip and The Idle Hours for a measly 3 bucks at Boneyard Pottery in Champaign, IL (403 South Water Street) on Saturday, September 18th at 8pm.

Nonagon (pictured above) is Robert Gomez-Bass, Tony Aimone-Drums and John Hastie-Guitar,vox. This will be our second show. Our first show was a rousing success, at least with one of the four 11 year-olds in attendence that evening. We will most likely be playing first, so you might want to get there late so you can miss us and just groove on the other two bands.

Microsoft Warns of Critical JPEG Flaw

Handling of images could allow an attacker to take over your PC.

A security flaw in the way many Microsoft applications process JPEG images could allow an attacker to gain control over a computer running the software, Microsoft warned this week...

I trust that OUR jpeg is not involved in any such nefarious schemes!

Oh, and in case you've forgotten, Bill Gates thinks It's Your Own Damn Fault.

I brought home some friends from the campsite!

Chigger.jpg

Chiggers first show up as annoying red bumps. An itch begins. It grows. More hard red welts surface. From your feet and ankles upward, and especially at those tender locations your mother told not to scratch in public, a maddening itch takes hold.

Savage scratching begins. Every welt becomes a persistent, exquisitely itching preoccupation that continues to irritate for days and even weeks. You probably recognize these symptoms of chigger bites. Yet we never see the culprits responsible for this summertime agony. What are chiggers? Why do they bite us? How can we stop that horrible itching?

Cheese-eating surrender monkeys: New and improved

Thanks to Q's selfless service to House 8, I am proud to announce the addition of auditory enhancement to category 1029, aka "Cheese-eating surrender monkeys". Q, if we had a House 8 medal of some sort, you'd get one.

Chris offers:

Quentin has vindicated himself for crashing the server. Take him off of double secret probation.

UPDATE: Q has been officially promoted to the office of Deputy Commander Helper Monkey. Congratulations! The kids will be so proud.

The full story:
The term originates from an episode in 1995, and was spoken neither by Homer nor Bart, but by Groundskeeper Willy:

[2F32] 'Round Springfield'

Written by Joshua Sternin & Jeffrey Ventimilia (teleplay) and Al Jean & Mike Reiss (story)

Production code: 2F32 Original airdate in N.A.: 30-Apr-95

A little later, Bart puts his hand up.
Bart: Mrs. Krabappel, I'm done failing the test. Can I _please_ go to the nurse?
Edna: Gosh, Bart, maybe you really are in pain.
Well...it would be cruel not to let you go.
[files her nails, hums the national anthem]
[hums part of "Stars and Stripes Forever"]
Heh heh heh, _now_ you may go.
Bart: [walking into nurse's room] Lunch Lady Doris? Why are you here?
Doris: Budget cuts. They've even got Groundskeeper Willy teaching French.
Willy: "Bonjourrr", you cheese-eating surrender monkeys!

Quentin's

As Ella uncovers more and more of what has gone on at Quentins, she begins to question the wisdom of capturing it all in a documentary. Are there some stories that are too sacred to be told, some secrets that must be kept?
